El Monte, CA Insurance Broker
Located about 12 miles east of Los Angeles, the city of El Monte is at the center of Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley, where Interstates 605 and 10 intersect, east of Pasadena. It is the 10th largest city in L.A. County. Incorporated in November of 1912, agriculture was the core of El Monte’s economy in the early part of the 20th century. Orchards, walnut groves, hay and vegetable fields, truck farms, and a growing dairy industry replaced most of the field crops previously grown in the area. But, as farm profits dramatically decreased during the Depression, orchards and groves were subdivided into home sites, transforming El Monte from an agricultural center to a bedroom community of commuters. The little town of farms, orchards, and groves is today an urban community supported by an industrial and commercial base that continues to expand.
Spaniards named the area “El Monte,” an archaic Spanish term that describes an uncultivated scrubland. It was part of the Old Spanish Trail which originated in Santa Fe, New Mexico, but was extended to El Monte in 1821. This is why the city is historically known as “The End of the Santa Fe Trail” although, even today, that claim is debated by historians.
Family friendly community
El Monte’s slogan is “Welcome to Friendly El Monte” which seems to be very appropriate for this welcoming and ethnically diverse community. This is diversity is reflected in the 2010 demographics – 72% Hispanic, 18% Asian, and 7% White.
Within its 10 square mile area, 58% of the land use is for homes, 11% stores, 10% industrial, 7% office/retail, and 14% other amenities. El Monte is home to Longo Toyota, one of the biggest car dealers in the U.S. by sales and volume. Major industries include Wells Fargo Operations Center, Von’s Distribution Warehouse, and the regional offices for East West and Cathay Banks.
El Monte is home to several community parks. Tony Arceo Memorial Park hosts a short series of free summer concerts, Pioneer Park which includes the Santa Fe Historical Park, and Zamora Park. The Whittier Narrows Recreation Area is one of L.A. County’s largest and most popular recreation areas. It offers El Monte residents a variety of amenities and things to do including hiking trails, biking and equestrian trails, baseball and soccer fields, and shooting ranges, to name a few.
The American Military Museum is home to over 170 military vehicles and outdoor exhibits dating from 1933 to the present, and the El Monte Historical Museum is home to all sorts of artifacts and exhibits that celebrate the oldest settlement in the San Gabriel Valley.
